That same month, a conversation between Lavín and a former Penta manager was leaked, confirming irregular donations made by the group to various politicians of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI). Due to the so-called " Penta case ", Lavín and Délano resigned from the boards of four companies of the Penta group -Penta Vida, Penta Security, Banmédica and Banco Penta- in December of the same year. In August 2014, the Internal Revenue Service (SII) denounced Lavín and six other people linked to Empresas Penta for tax fraud before the Public Ministry. Currently the group's investments are concentrated in the companies Penta Vida, Penta Security, Banco Penta and Banmédica, among others. Later they acquired AFP Cuprum (1991), Isapre Vida Tres SA (1991) and Banco de Chile (1999) -sold in 2000 to the Luksic Group. Together with his partner Carlos Alberto Délano, they were the founders of the Empresas Penta holding company, starting from businesses carried out in the 1980s in the field of life insurance. In 1978 he married María de la Luz Chadwick Hurtado, with whom he had a son named Francisco. He married in his first nuptials with the writer Elizabeth Subercaseaux, with whom he had three children Carlos, Angélica and Alejandra. He studied at Saint George's College and later entered a career in commercial engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1962–1966). He is the son of Eugenio Lavín Rodríguez and María Angélica García Huidobro Jaraquemada.
